Cultural Ceuta

Ceuta's history is linked to the fact that it was a fortified town, which is the reason why the city has three different military museums. We also use the latest 3D audio-visual systems and learning tools to explain the defence role played by the fortified walls and their evolution throughout time.

Contemporary exhibitions, as well as exhibits describing the history of the port, the cathedral and the numerous archaeological sites can be visited as well as visual displays that use photographs and scale models.

Ceuta Museum

This building is an example of the eclectic classical-style architecture, prototype for the civil engineering works of Ceuta's military engineers. It was built in 1900 as a military residence, and was home to soldiers who took part in Spain's history during the last century, including Francisco Franco, Luis Carrero or Eduardo Sáez de Buruaga. It currently houses the Institute for Ceuti studies, dedicated to promoting research; the Peaceful Coexistence Prize Foundation and the City Museum, with rooms dedicated to ancient, medieval, modern and contemporary history and temporary exhibition rooms. One of its most outstanding features is the marble sarcophagus known as the Four Seasons, and the stone and marble remains from the Madrasa al-Yadida, a 14th century Arab university. It has been declared an Object of Cultural Interest. The collection is displayed in five rooms which show the evolution of Ceuta's history from prehistoric times through to the present day, plus two temporary rooms usually reserved for painting and photography exhibitions.
